BIS Raids Amazon and Flipkart Warehouses: Seizes ₹76 Lakh in Non-ISI Goods

​The Bureau of Indian Standards BIS has raided the warehouses of e-commerce bigwigs Amazon and Flipkart in the national capital in a fresh enforcement action. The operations were aimed at stopping the distribution of substandard products, and goods worth about ₹76 lakh were seized.​

BIS Targets Amazon Warehouse in 15-Hour Operation

The raid was executed by officials of the BIS at the premises of Amazon Sellers Pvt Ltd in the Mohan Cooperative Industrial Area on March 19. More than 3,500 electrical appliances, such as geysers and food mixers, were seized during this operation. The total value of these products was estimated at ₹70 lakh, either due to lack of mandatory ISI certification or similar counterfeit ISI was found on these products. ​

Flipkart Subsidiary Warehouse Also Under Scrutiny

BIS officials also took part in a concurrent action to inspect the premises of Instakart Services Pvt Ltd, subsidiary of Flipkart, situated at Tri Nagar in Delhi. At the raid they found around 590 pairs of sports footwear, packaged for dispatch but without ISI mark and having no information about manufacturing date. The seized footwear was worth around ₹6 lakh. ​

E-Commerce Platforms Respond to Allegations

Amazon and Flipkart in particular have come out to issue statements stressing their commitment to complying with regulations and having safe and secure consumer environments. “Any seller listing and selling products on Amazon needs to comply with applicable laws, regulations, and Amazon policies” an Amazon India spokesperson told Mumbai Mirror. “If we become aware of any non compliance we take appropriate action.” Like Flipkart, it also brought to light the measures it has been taking, both in terms of driving awareness among local Indian sellers and in ensuring that such sellers comply with applicable laws. ​

The raids are a part of BIS’s drive across the nation to enforce quality standards. Similarly, in the past few weeks, such operations have happened in several cities like Gurugram, Faridabad, Lucknow and Sriperumbudur leading to the seizure of such non compliant products. ​
